How to Decorate and Organize a Small Room

Three blog posts in a row? I guess a two-year (sorta) hiatus is all it took to get back in the swing of things. Honestly, I think it’s because I recently moved back to a more metropolitan area and there is so much inspiration. How can I not

Moving after 9 years in the same house was one of the most daunting experiences ever. As a former military brat who moved almost every two years had no idea what moving house actually entailed. I could go on about the actual moving part but I really want to talk about downsizing and organizing a smaller space.

Before I was in a loft/attic space and now I’m in a bedroom that is about 3x as small. So the first thing that needed to be done was to get rid of some things and become more minimal than I already am. Luckily, I only had to store some furniture that I knew wouldn’t fit. Storage is going to be your best friend when it comes to living in a small space. Space bags, boxes, over-the-door hooks, vertical storage, etc. is key! A tall chest of drawers is storing my foldable clothes at the moment and I also make good use of storage bags for out-of-season clothing. I ordered some over-the-door hooks to hang any jackets or robes that I reach for most often.

Bar carts are your second best friend. The more tiers they have the better. I put all my small electronics on one bar cart and small haircare accessories on another. My perfumes are also living on my haircare bar cart. Crates have a pretty special place in my heart which is why I was bummed when I thought I didn’t have enough space for them. Not only can they double as makeshift shelves, but they are also good stands for plants. The best part is, crates can be stacked (more vertical storage!) and tiered.

Normally, I would go for open storage, but closed storage works best in a smaller space. My loft space had lots of open storage like Lack Shelves from Ikea and rolling racks from Urban Outfitters. However, it was either my vanity or my rolling racks and I went with the former. Thank goodness I have an actual closet now which will be talked more about in my next blog post.

I personally didn’t do this, but walls can be a good way to utilize your space. Command hooks and strips are pretty amazing. If you can hang up some shelves in your space, then do it! If you’re a crafter – hang a peg board! Now, if you’re in a rental and don’t want to risk damaging any wall, I would definitely not hang anything.

Hopefully, this post wasn’t all over the place and it sparked some inspiration. I’m still planning this space out, so some things might change here and there. In about a year, I should be moved into my new space and I can’t wait to document that.

Also, I might skip next week so that I can draft some gift guides in advance. I want to go all out too. So check back in the next couple of weeks to see the first gift guide of 2022 for the holiday season! Anyway, thanks for reading,

ChelsiKay
