3 Ways to Start Collecting Luxury Bags

For months, I mulled over whether or not to purchase handbags, you know the ones with all the bells and whistles and the crazy looking price tags. Yeah those. Being in the fashion industry, I’ve always lowkey wanted a luxury handbag and over the years I’ve been slowly working my way to getting there. Luxury handbags are a whole different ball game that I wasn’t sure I was ready for, but I decided to dip my toe in just to see. I’m just beginning but so far, I think I like it. Even though I’m just starting out my little collection, I picked up a few tips that are helping me and I wanted to share with those who are interested. Keep reading if you want some tips on starting your own luxury bag collection.

  1. Start with a Small Leather Good

When you first enter the world of luxury bags, it can be difficult to justify purchasing something so expensive you’re not sure you’re even going to use. Why not start with something like a wallet or a cardholder? I noticed that small leather goods or SLGs are most people’s first purchase when entering the luxury industry. I personally find SLGs to be more practical than the handbags just because it’s something you know you’re going to use almost on a daily basis. Not only is a wallet going to be cheaper, but it’s also something that can be carried in any bag luxury or not.

2. Buy pre-loved

There are so many sites to shop from that sell pre-loved or used bags and I’m here for it. I purchased a 2003 Speedy 25 on Fashion Phile and it is in great condition. The bag looks almost brand new aside from barely visible markings on the handles. You have to look super up close to find some dings and scratches. Although, that doesn’t really matter to me because it’s a 17-year-old bag after all. There are definitely some gems out there that won’t break the bank. I will probably always look at pre-loved first before actually going on the actual site unless the bag or SLG is priced higher on pre-loved sites.

3. Buy in your style

The designer bag world is pretty vast if you ask me and everyone still tends to buy the same type of bag and style. I know the reason for this is because most people buy bags as investment pieces. This can be a smart choice if you do plan on selling back and not really looking to wear your handbag. I actually did this with my very first luxury purchase, however, I also purchased a bag I knew I was going to wear for years to come. While I don’t plan on selling the bag, I do want to be able to have the option just in case I do decide to. If you are buying a handbag just to wear and never sell, then definitely purchase something in the style you actually like. Don’t worry about what’s trendy and what other people like, it’s your money after all and you can do as you please.

I hope these were some helpful tips to get you started on collecting your own luxury bags. I know it can be pretty daunting at first, but I personally think it’s so worth it and you know you’ll have your purchases for a long time. One of these days, I want to get into purchasing more investment pieces that I can sell back but until then, these are the little luxuries I have at the moment.
