Less Common Houseplants that are Easy to Care For

I knew talking about plants here would be a slippery slope for me because I would end up talking about them more and more – especially during this strange time. Last year, I was in a very weird (not bad) place and for some reason, I turned to plants. I was told that this was my way of connecting with nature and becoming more spiritual. I don’t know how true that is but all of my plants are in fantastic shape. Could I be a plant goddess? Kidding. Of course, there were times some of my babies tried it and almost died on me. But that kind of comes with the territory of being a plant mama. So today I want to share more plants that are super easy to take care of without little to no effort.

This first plant I’m mentioning is on the top of the list because it actually is kind of common but also starting to gain lots of popularity lately. The Snake Plant or Sansevieria. You’ve seen it somewhere; probably in a magazine or in a hotel lobby. These are plants that you can neglect if you really want to. They don’t need much light, but they still need some. I’ve noticed artificial light works just the same on these babies. They don’t require much water at all. It can go months without water in the wintertime and about a month during the springtime. Also, Snake plants make great decor pieces just about anywhere.

Even in the plant community on Youtube, I don’t see anyone with Baby Rubber plants or Peperomia Obtusifolia too often. I could be wrong though, but these are great if you love to see quick growth and also slightly heavy-handed with watering. For me, this plant grew all year round and even more during the colder months. Baby Rubber plants and Peperomias alike growing season are actually during the Fall which is nice because other plants will slow down in growth in cooler weather.

One of my all-time favorite plants is a Scindapsus Pictus or Satin/Silver/Silk Pothos. Personally, I like these better than Golden Pothos and Heartleaf Philodendron because they have gorgeous markings on them and the leaves grow so big with regular fertilizing. If I were to recommend any plant to a beginner, expert or otherwise, it’d definitely be a Scindapsus. This plant can tolerate medium light and go pretty long without watering (1-2 weeks.)

Lastly, I want to talk about a category of plants that just naturally do well without much help. Any type of Dracaena will thrive with little to no effort. You’ll usually see Dracaenas in hotels and stores as well because they tend to be great decor pieces just like Sansevieria. My personal favorite is the Dracaena Marginata because of how large and crazy they grow. Falling close behind is Mass Cane and Song of India – all are very beautiful and honestly pretty underrated. Personally, I think Dracaenas make a great plant for a beginner especially if you want a plant that grows big or into a tree one day.

To be honest, any plant becomes easy to take care of once you learn it’s lighting, watering, and soil requirements. At first, becoming a plant parent can seem so daunting but I promise it’s really simple and fun. I hope this helped anyone who is looking for some plants that aren’t as common as my first list of easy-care plants. If you haven’t already go check that post out while you’re here!
