How to Update and Elevate Your Style

I’ve been wanting to update my style for quite some time now. Slowly, I have been purchasing clothing that I feel better fits my current style aspirations. Now I’m not changing it up too much, but I am definitely going for a more grown, sexy, pulled together, yet comfortable aesthetic. Now I’ve been going at this at a pretty slow pace because I’d rather not waste any money on something that doesn’t fit within my wardrobe. Keep reading if you want to know the steps I took into changing up my style and how you can update yours too.

Patterns

The first few garments that I knew I was going to get rid of or at least switch out, was anything with big patterns. I used to always go for stripes – especially big stripes. Now for some reason, I don’t like them AT ALL. I recently wore a striped dress and it was very cute, but looking back at photos I felt I could have worn something that better suited my new style aspirations as well as my age. Big stripes now come off as a little juvenile in my opinion – especially horizontal, colorful ones. If I do plan on wearing stripes in the future, I’ll be sure they are thinner and neutral colors. A pattern that I would like to add to my wardrobe is some type of animal print. If worn correctly, I feel like cheetah or snake print may really step up my style game.

Colors

Now I’ve always been into neutrals, but I got a little carried away with the color grey. It’s a great color that works with pretty much any other color, but it can get monotonous over time. I’ve got grey shirts, dresses, sweaters, leggings – you name it.  Even though I love grey, I’m starting to incorporate more nude or brown into my wardrobe just to break up some of the monotony. I recently purchased a lilac color just to see if I’d like a more pastel color palette. I’m definitely not against it. Another color (or lack thereof) that I’m having a moment with is white. White tee’s or button-downs have always been a staple, but white joggers, white sweaters, white bodysuits are a whole new vibe for me. Over time, I’ll be including more white into my wardrobe. It’s a very sleek and grown-up non-color that I should have given a chance a long time ago.

A Bit More Sexy

Ok, hear me out. I like the fact that I look young, but I don’t exactly like that at times I can look like a child. There are times when it is important to be taken seriously especially in a professional environment but also when I’m out on the town and even as a content creator. On many occasions, I’ve been mistaken as an 18-year-old from people who are the same age as me or younger. In the bigger scheme of things, it’s not a huge deal but, I’d like to at the very least look close to my age. I feel like I can reflect that in my style by adding a little bit more sexiness to my wardrobe. As some of you know, I love a good bodysuit – a low-cut one at that. I would like to add more little black dresses to my closet as well. I mean we all know that LBD’s are one of the sexiest pieces in a wardrobe. Oddly enough, I don’t have one anymore, but that’s about to change really soon.

Updating or changing up your style isn’t just going out and buying new clothes, but really accessing the garments you feel most comfortable in and also look good in. From there you can add new, different elements that still scream “you.” For instance, I love leggings, but what if I wore some faux leather or velvet leggings to spice things up? Maybe you normally wear skinny jeans with most of your tops; try wearing boyfriend jeans or bell bottoms. Also, don’t be afraid to try things you normally wouldn’t wear either. For example, I’m not a huge skirt wearer but maybe that will be something I try this spring. I don’t have to buy a lot of skirts or an expensive one – I can start with one that’s affordable. Try changing things up this way and truly finding what works for you; it’s all about trial and error.
