4 Ways to Make Life a Little More Simple

For the past few years, I’ve been on this journey to living a more simple life. This doesn’t mean I want to live a boring life with no adventure, but it would be nice to live a little bit more slowly these days. I think if we changed some of our small lifestyle habits, we would probably be much happier. I could write a book on how to simplify your life, but for now how about trying these four tips and seeing how they work for you.

  1. Set your own sleep schedule

In the past few years, there has been an uprise of posts and videos on the effects of being an early riser. I can’t tell you how many productivity posts I’ve read that say we should start our days at 5am or like a Navy Seal (430am.) Here’s the thing, your body will tell you what works for you. Over the last month and a half, I’ve been going to sleep around 10:30pm and waking up at 5:45am and it is hell. By 12pm I’m grouchy, unproductive, and unmotivated. Now, when I don’t have an alarm set, I’m usually awake around 6:30am and surprisingly well-rested and in a much better mood. I know for most people you have to wake up at a certain time in order to make it to school or work, but if you can, try playing around with your sleep whether it be going to bed a little earlier or waking up a little later.

2. UNIFORM!

I mention this ALL the time when it comes to my wardrobe. Waking up in the morning and trying to find an outfit is most likely going to set you back. However, if you have a uniform or an outfit that you always tend to reach for you’ll save a little bit more time. Now the uniform isn’t the same old outfit over and over again, but it is the base of an outfit. For instance, high-waist jeans and a bodysuit or black leggings and a sweater. From there you’ll add shoes, maybe a jacket, and then of course accessories. Obviously, you can plan out your outfits a day or week ahead, but for some, that doesn’t always work out. Try playing around with different bases to see what your uniform is.

3. Stop doing EVERYTHING

Every so often I’ll peruse Facebook and see friends posting statuses about how they’re in a graduate program and starting a business and working a full-time career, and planning a wedding and building a whole village for chickens. Seriously, this is an overload and you don’t have to do it all. People will often wonder why they’re so stressed out or why they keep falling ill and it’s because of all these goals we feel like we need to accomplish in shorts amount of time. On top of all this, we still have daily tasks that need to be done, so try limiting your goals down to just a few.

4. Hell yes or no

I’m sure many of you have seen this phrase floating around on the interwebs. Say you’re faced with a decision that needs to be made, use this way of thinking to make your mind up. Often times when decision making, we can be uncertain and usually doing something we don’t want to do. If you use the hell yes or no mentality you won’t be stuck in awkward situations you’d rather not be in. I’m actually dealing with this now. A coworker of mine recently got sucked into a multi-level marketing business (pyramid scheme) and invited me to her “gathering.” I politely declined, saying I wouldn’t be able to make it. It can be really easy to say yes to something like this because you fear hurting someone’s feelings, however, something like that was a definite no for me. Apply this practice to your life and it will be so easy to make decisions again.
